Eukaryotic Cells Flashcards
Examples of eukaryotic organisms
Animals, plants and fungi
Key features of a eukaryotic cell
-DNA contained in membrane-bound (surrounded by membrane) nucleus
- Some eukaryotic cells can lose nucleus as develop- red blood cells
-DNA tightly wrapped around proteins called histones-together, DNA and histone proteins form chromosomes.
Why is DNA coiled
By tightly coiling their DNA into chromosomes, eukaryotic cells can pack a great deal of DNA into their nucleus.
DNA is a ____ molecule
DNA is a linear molecule, word linear means ends of DNA molecule in a chromosome are not joined together to form a loop.
What are the membrane bound organelles in a eukaryotic cell
Mitochondria, Golgi apparatus and the endoplasmic reticulum
- in plant cells we also find chloroplast and vacuole
Which organelles are not membrane bound in eukaryotic cells
Ribosomes (80S)
S=how quickly organelles move in a centrifuge.
What are eukaryotic cells surrounded by
A cell surface membrane, helps control molecules which can pass in and out of a cell. - in plants and fungi, the cell membrane is surrounded by a cell wall.
Function of a cell wall
Helps maintain structure of a cell.
- In plant cells, cell wall is made of polysaccharide cellulose.
-In fungi, the cell wall is made from polysaccharide chitin.
What are the cell membranes made out of
Phospholipid bilayers
