Eukaryotic cell organelles Flashcards
contains DNA, nucleoproteins, some RNA
Nucleus
Site of ribosomal RNA synthesis
Nucleoulus
2 membranes separating nucleus from cytoplasm: phospholipid bilayer, contains pores (allows communication between nuclear contents and cytoplasm large molecules eg protein/RNA can pass through pores), outer membrane continuous with RER +contains ribosomes
Nuclear envelope
network of membranous tubules within cell
Rough has ribosomes for protein synthesis ( proteins produced on ribosomes enter lumen and travel to Golgi complex)
smooth contains oxidative enzymes used in compound production and metabolism of drugs and other toxic chemicals
Endoplasmic reticulum
modifies proteins produced in RER + distributes to other cell regions/cell exterior
curved stack of flattened vesicles in cytoplasm
Golgi apparatus/complex
separate enzymes from rest of cell (prevent cell digesting itself) as membrane impermeable to enzymes and substrates
used in autophagy (digestion of cells own material) or digestion of engulfed particles
Lysosome
cytoplasmic organelles involved in oxidative reactions using molecular oxygen producing H2O2 (used in peroxisome for other oxidative reactions/degraded by catalase to water and oxygen
Peroxisomes
inner and outer membranes to build up gradients (outer=pores, inner=cristae)
material enclosed in inner membrane=matrix-contains binding sites for calcium and most enzymes for oxidation of food molecules
contain plasmids-reproduce by replicating DNA + dividing in half. DNA used to synthesis proteins within organelle
Mitochondria
made of microtubules
short, usually many present, move with stiff power stroke and flexible recovery
Cilia
made of microtubules, longer, usually 1/2 present, movement is snake like
Flagella
