Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic Cells Flashcards
What are the similarities between a eukaryotic cell and a prokaryotic cell?
They are both cells, they both have a cell membrane and they both have ribosomes.
What is a eukaryotic cell?
These are nucleus containing cells. They have membrane bound organelles. These cells are found in plants, animals, fungi and protists.
What is a prokaryotic cell?
These are cells without a nucleus. They have no organelles. Bacteria is a type of prokaryotic cell.
What are the differences between a eukaryotic cell and a prokaryotic cell?
Eukaryotic cells have a nucleus, membrane enclosed organelles and mitochondria.
Prokaryotic cells have a flagellum, a nucleoid, some have a capsule and all have a cell wall.
What is the difference in order of magnitude/size between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells?
Prokaryotic cells are 0.1 - 0.5 micro meters in size, whereas Eukaryotic cells are 10 - 100 micro meters in size.
The difference in order of magnitude is that eukaryotic cells are between about (x10 to the power of 2) to (x10 to the power of 3) bigger than prokaryotic cells.
