Euarchantogliries Flashcards
1
Q
Scandentia and Dermpotera
what are the main defining traites of both families
A
- Scandentia = tree shrews (not true shrews)
- often considered basal members of primates but they lack sociality and maternal care that are characteristics in primates
- Dermoptera = Cologo (flying lemur not real lemur)
- more closley related to primates
- have a patagium
2
Q
Scandentia
traits that connect them to primates
A
have great hands for grasping, giving early evidence of primate development.
3
Q
Scandentia
General info
A
- 2 families, 4 genus, 23 species
- more diverse than Dermoptera
4
Q
scandentia
Traits
A
- many secies are more terrestrial
- extremly active
- most are diurnal with the exception of one species that is noctural.
- most found in south and southeast asia
- make 2 nest one for offspring and one for adults
- hardly any sexual dimorphism
5
Q
scandentia
what is absentee care and what does it entail.
A
- They give birth to 1-2 offspring
- The offspring have very large stomachs to deal with milk meals.
- they only nurse for 10min every 48 hours.
- the mothers milk is very high in protiens and fat that allow them to only need to feed every 48hours along with their large stomachs.
- after 1 month the offspring leave the natel nest to join the parents.
6
Q
scandentia
what is unique about the pen tailed tree shrew
A
- they are alchoholics!
- they are one of the only mammals that consumes large amounts of alcohol daily
- they consume fermented floral nectar and palm nectar (open niche)
- cna drink as much as their body weight in wine but never appear drunk.
- highly efficient in breaking down allcohol containing 30x the level of ethylglucurchide than found in a very drunk person.
- formed a mutualistic relationship with a species of pitcher plant in borneo that they practice latrene behavior with giving the plant its nitrogen.
7
Q
Dermoptera
general characteristics
A
- single family, 2 genera, 2 species
- found in SE Asia
8
Q
Dermoptera
special traits
A
- they are membrane gliders: not true flight
- use their patagium that is longer than most to glide between trees
- nocternal and have large eye sockets
- pelage color varies between sex (dichromatism) and is cryptic aainst tree bark
- they have a diet of leaves, flowers, fruit and sap.
- digest with a large cecum (hindgut)
