Started with 6 members with the signing of the Treaty of Rome.
What happened in 1973
Expanded to 9 countries when the UK and Ireland joined
What happened in 1981
Greece joined making it ten countries
What happened in 1986
Spain and Portugal joined making it 12 countries
What happened in 1995
Three more countries joined making it 15 countries
What happened in 2004
Ten countries join. Most from Eastern. This is called the Enlargement
What happened in 2007
Romania and Bulgaria joined. There is now 27 countries
What happened in 2013
Croatia joined. This made it 28 countries

The European Union is a group of countries where governments work together.
