ETVT constitutional reforms since 2015 have gone far enough Flashcards
1- brexit has been a sucess
- the 2016 brexit act leaving the eu has returned sovereignty to parliament, the uk is no longer subject to eu law
- the govt were able to swiftly pass legislation without interference of eu law e.g rwanda bill 2023 and the northern ireland trade deal
1- leaving the eu has led to more problems
- rejoin eu party may 2024
- 4m signatures on a second eu referendum
- brexit also undermined scotland and northern ireland who voted to remain
2- house of lords
house of lords suspension and expulsion act 2015 gave the house further powers that allowed for the expulsion of peers who breach the lords code of conduct
2015 lords spiritual (women) act allowed for a time-limited provision for vacancies among the Lords Spiritual to be filled by bishops who are women.
2- lords
however, the composition of the lords remains ‘male, pale and stale’ and the behaviour of peers isnt always held to account
- 6% BAME and 29% women
- cash for peerage shows how pperage is a reward
3- mps
2015 recall of mps act allows constituents to remove mps before the end of their term if:
Convicted of a crime and given a sentence of 12 months or less
If they are suspended by the house for at least 10 days
If they make false or misleading expenses claims
If 10% of constituents sign the removal petition within 6w, then a by election is held
has been sucessfull 4/5 times its been triggered e.g chris davies for submitting fake expenses
3- this isnt enough to hold mps to account
sometimes mps do things that do not warrant a triggering of the recall of mps
1. no mps had a fixed penalty after partygate
2. little conequences after mp scandal
