Ethoclines & Ancestral State Recon Flashcards
ethogram vs ethocline
ethogram
- catalog of fixed action patterns
ethocline
- a progressive change in the pattern of behaviour of a group of closely related organisms, more recently evolved members will have more complicated patterns
what is ancestral state reconstruction
tool used it estimate the characteristics of ancestors by combining information from a phylogenetic tree and observed traits of existing species
describe “ancestral state reconstruction is only as good as the phylogeny being used”
- reconstruction relies on a good phylogenetic tree to being with ! in order to get accurate data
what are character states
any heritable traits for which there is a reasonable hypothesis for homology
what is maximum parsimony
explains relationship in simplist way
- infers the character states at nodes of a phylogenetic tree
