What is institutional racism?
Discrimination that is built into institutions such as the education system.

Teachers found that south Asian students had a poor grasp of English, which led them to baby them and place them in lower school sets
-this limits their achievement as they aren’t pushed as far as they need to
Mirza (institutional racism)
Black students received racism from their teachers. Identified 3 types of teacher racism
- colour blind- those that try not to be racist but say the wrong things
- liberal chauvinists-those who have a negative view of minorities but try to help
- overt racists- Openly racist
Sewell (institutional racism)
Studies how black students cope with racism in schools.

He identifies 4 ways that the boys respond:
Rebels-anti school who rebel to gain status
Conformists-those who confirmed as they wanted to succeed
Retreatists-didn’t do well and they didn’t want to do well either
Innovators- pro education but anti school
