What are the out of school factors that some ethnic groups outperform others?
Cultural deprivation- family structure, attitudes and values, linguistic skills and racism in wider society

Pakistanis and Bangladeshis are 3x more likely than whites to be the poorest 5% of the population and 3x as likely to be homeless
Unemployment is 3x higher for Afro Caribbean’s, Bangladeshis and Pakistanis than it is for white people

Gillborn and Mizra say Indian pupils have very high attainment so having English as a second language is not a major barrier.

Teachers have expectations that black pupils will generally present disciplinary problems and they therefore tended to feel that control and punishment had to be given higher priority than academic concerns.
