Q

black and minority ethnic groups are more likely hold lower positions within the marketplace (barron and norris)

A
  • there is a dual labour market which can be used to explain the position and unemployment patterns: primary and secondary labour
  • ethnic minorities are less likely than white workers to obtain primary sector jobs because:
  • employers may subscribe to racist beliefs about the unsuitably and practise discrimination against them
  • certain groups may also face concrete ceiling and be denied promotion
  • the legal and political framework supporting minority ethnic groups is often weak and ineffective
  • trade union are usually white dominated and favour white workers

Q

a persons experience of inequality is influenced by the level of respect they receive from others (parkin)

A
  • some groups (white) hold power positions of power in the labour market whereas others that are in negatively privileged positions whereby they are kept our of certain positions
  • white people in positions of power exercise social closure within the labour market by appointing other white workers into positions of power
  • status groups can be competitive and aim to achieve social closure which means that they try to monopolise privilege and exclude other groups from they positions of privilege
  • this could mean that status and power are in the hands of the majority ethnic group making it difficult for ethnic minority groups to compete equally
  • ethnic minority face a concrete ceiling due to social closure
which is the process in which certain social groups aim to maximise societies rewards by restricting access to resources and workplace opportunities

Q

political parties and trade unions do not reflect the interests of ethnic mimority groups (weber)

A
  • organisations such as trade unions seem to be dominated by white members which can lead to ethnic minorities voices not being heard
  • this therefore shows that black and moiety ethnic groups are less likely to exercise any forms of political power
