Ethnicity Flashcards
Gillian Evans (2006)
Street culture in white working class areas can be brutal and so children have to learn to experience intimidation and intimidate others
Keddie
Cultural deprivation arguments as a victim blaming explanation she argues ethnic minority children are culturally different not deprived. They underachieve because should are ethnocentric and based in favour of white culture and against minorities
Gillborn (2008)
Difference in educational achievement is a result of not peer pressure but institutional racism within the education system itself
Tony Sewell (2009) - family and the wider culture
It isn’t the absence of male role models in single parent families that leads to black boys underachievement but the lack of fatherly nurturing or ‘tough love’ . Due to the absence of fatherly nurturing boys are offered perverse loyalty and love by other fatherless boys. Their role model is an ultra-tough media construction which opposes school culture
Tony Sewell (2009) research
He interviewed successful boys and they felt the greatest barrier to success was pressure from other boys - doing well was often seen as selling out to the white establishment
Ruth Lupton (2004) - family attitudes
Argues that adult authority in Asian families is similar to the model that operates in schools. She found that respectable behaviour towards adults was expected of children. This meant parents would likely be more supportive of school behaviour policies
Bereiter and Englemann (1966) - language
They consider the language spoken by low-income back American families as inadequate for educational success. They see it as ungrammatical, disjointed and incapable of expressing abstract ideas
Platt (2011)
Examined hourly rates of pay for male full time employees in the UK and found similar patterns in educational achievement. Suggesting that some groups do better for living in higher income families. This pattern doesn’t fit for African Carribein males and Bangladeshi students
Gillborn and Mizra (2000) - the effects of social class on different ethnic groups attainment.
Data from Youth Cohort Studies 1997-1998 showed that there was a strong relationship between social class and achievement in all ethic groups. However African- Caribbean children especially boys didn’t do as well as their peers even when class was considered
Gillborn and Youdell (2000) - teacher/ pupil relationships
They found that teachers expected black pupils to present discipline problems and misinterpreted their behaviour as threatening or as a challenge to authority. Students felt picked on and that their ability is underestimated. They concluded much of the conflict between white teachers and black pupils stems from ‘radicalised expectations’
Archer (2010) - teacher/ pupil relationships
Teachers stereotype Asian girls as passive and quiet. Findings show that when this stereotype has been challenged they are often dealt with more severely than other pupils
Steve Strand (2012) - teacher/pupil relationships
Found that black pupils being systematically under- represented in entry to higher tier tests which reflects teachers expectations
Bernard Coard (1971,2005) - the curriculum
In history the British may be presented as being civilisation to the ‘primitive’ people they colonised. He argues this image of black people as inferior undermines black children’s self-esteem
Ball (1994) - the curriculum
Criticises the national curriculum for ignoring ethnic diversity and promoting an attitude of ‘Little Englandism’ - a mythical empire and past glories ignoring the history of black and Asian people
Moore and Davenport (1990) - the organisation of teaching and learning
Research from the USA shows minority students failing to get into better secondary schools due to discrimination. They found that primary school reports were used to screen out people with language difficulties, whilst the application process was difficult for non-english speaking parents to understand
