Educational Policies Flashcards
What is the aim of educational policies
The aim of educational policies is to give all students an equal opportunity despite class ethnicity or gender - based off Davis and Moores theory of meritocracy
Educational priority areas
Set up in 1967. Places like Birmingham, Liverpool, London, were given extra money to lessen the gap of differential achievement in class, gender and ethnicity. Also to encourage poor children’s involvement
Douglas (1964)
Poorer parents are less likely than MC parents to take intrest in their childrens education
Tripartite system
All students had to take the 11+ which thhen allowed them to be sllocated to one of three schools:
Grammar school - for students who were academic
Technical schools - for those who were scientific or creative
Secondary modern - for those who weren’t academic
This was a result of the Butlers education act (1944)
Why did the tripartite system fail?
- few technical schools were built
- the MC dominated grammar schools
- the WC dominated secondary modern schools
- employers preferred grammar school graduates over secondary modern graduates
- mainly benefitted students with economic and cultural capital
