Ethics & Sustainability Flashcards
What is sustainable design?
The inclusion of any aspect of design that will reduce any harmful impact (due to production, materials, disposal) on humans and the environment around them.
What is the Life-Cycle approach to design?
Ideas and designs that incorporate sustainable and ecological view points.
If the life cycle approach is applied in the design stages but not in the manufacturing stages, will that product be sustainable? Explain the answer.
No because the approach has to be integrated throughout all of the stages.
Using the life cycle approach explain how a designer would think about a product with a short lifespan?
How to reduce energy consumption. Look at using alternative materials like recycled ones.
Give three points on how to make a design process more sustainable.
1) Think about using digital technology
2) Design products that can easily be taken apart
3) Ensure product is designed to a high quality
How can manufacturing and production stages be more sustainable?
1) Use a local factory for manufacture
2) Review ways of disposing of chemical waste
3) Use a factory that uses a closed loop system
How can packaging be more sustainable?
1) Use reusable packaging
2) Make packaging out of one material only
3) Engage end users in recycling packaging
How can transport in textiles be made more sustainable?
1) limit use of air transport
2) video conferencing
3) make sure product is easy to transport when it has to be
How can a products end use be more sustainable?
1) Easily repaired
2) Eco friendly washing instructions
3) Don’t tumble dry
Why do we recycle textile products?
1) save energy
2) save raw materials
3) save resources
4) reduce energy use
5) reduce harmful impacts on the environment
What is primary recycling?
The textiles product can be re used straightaway and no further processing is needed. Donations to charity shops.
What is secondary recycling?
This process requires the textiles product to be torn, shredded, melted or grounded.
What is tertiary recycling?
Textile products are broken down and reformulated.
If a product is described to have built in obsolescence, what does this mean?
The product has been designed with features that will make it last a particular amount of time.
What are the six R’s of sustainability?
Reuse Recycle Refuse Reduce Repair Rethink
