Decoration and Enhancement Flashcards
What is the definition of surface decoration?
Surface decoration is a method of applying stitches and creating patterns and colour with the addition of beads and other decoration processes.
What are ateliers?
Experts at surface decoration in the haute couture industry.
Describe patchwork.
A method of applying colour and pattern. Small squares (or different polygons in crazy patchwork) are all joined together to create a pattern. It is good for adding tones of colour as small pieces of fabric can be used. It is also good in terms of upcycling for a sustainable product.
Describe hand embroidery.
This technique involves a variation of different stitches done by hand with your standard needle and thread. Mixing intricate stitches, using different colours and textures of embroidery threads can create great designs.
Give examples of hand embroidery stitches?
- Straight stitch
- Satin stitch
- Blanket stitch
- Chain stitch
- Couching
- Herringbone Stitch
- French knot
Describe machine embroidery?
This technique of surface decoration applies different stitches with the use of a machine. There are two main types of machine embroidery. You can use ‘free hand machine embroidery’ or ‘digitized computer software’.
Describe free hand machine embroidery.
This is when the feed dogs on the sewing machine are lowered and the average presser foot is replaced with a hoop like less restrictive one. This creates much more freedom allowing stitching and design to be applied in any area of the fabric. You can use stitches that are already programmed on to the machine, you can use satin stitch or lines of straight stitch or you can use computerised stitches you make up yourself.
Describe embroidery using CAD.
Designs can be created directly on the machine using the built in software that aid design with grids and templates.
Designs can be created using computer programmes that are part of the sewing machine. Your design will be turned into a stitch pattern that is exported to the machine using a card or a direct link to machines database.
Talk about the differences of industrial CAD machines for embroidery.
Lots of colours can be used as they use multi-heads, basically lots of spool pins with different coloured bobbins on them. On domesticated machines, you have to keep changing the bobbin. They go really fast and can complete several products at once.
Describe appliqué.
It is the technique where a shape or design made from one fabric is applied to the surface or background of another fabric. The applied fabric is usually backed with interfacing to give it strength and stability. The design is secured on with a fine zig zag or satin stitch that overlaps the fabric to give a neatened edge.
Describe appliqué with the aid of CAD.
Appliqué designs can be created on the usual embroidery design computer software and exported onto to the machine. The machine will then produce a step by step appliqué plan. Using CAD means the design will have accurate placing and a high quality finish.
What is embellishment?
The process of applying textured decoration onto the surface of fabrics. Beading, sequins or textured stitches could be used.
Talk about the embellishment technique shisha?
Small mirrors are embellished onto the material to reflect colours of other materials and to catch the light.
What is the technique Mola work also known as?
Reverse applique.
How are textiles companies helping to maintain traditional decoration techniques?
They are working with locals in countries like Malaysia and India and Africa.
