Asserts that moral standards are culturally defined and it may be impossible to determine what is truly right
Interesting Relativism
a claim that is true for one person or culture can be false for another
Boring Relativism
uttering the same claim/sentence it may be what I say is true and what you say is false
What is the Divine Command Theory
A philosophical theory that suggests that the morality and ethical behavior are derived from the commands of God/s
What are the 3 key concepts
Objective morality, moral simplicity, God’s sovereignty
what is objective morality
exists beyond human opinion or cultural relativism
what is moral simplicity
every action can be definitively categorized as right or wrong by comparing against gods’ commands
what is God’s sovereignty
God will is absolute and its foundation for all moral principles
what is objective morality
Objective morality is the idea that moral principles exist independently of human opinion or cultural norms and are universally true regardless of an individual’s beliefs or circumstances
what is a problem with the Divine Command Theory
We can find flaws in it such as ‘honoring our mother and father’ unless they are harmful
We can always find exceptions to gods rules
