what is the process of complaints procedures in dentistry
1 - local complaint e.g to practice
2 - Scottish public service ombudsman (SPSO - service looking at complaints against public services)
3 - complaint to GDC - fitness to practice
4 - Negligence litigation
negligence in dentistry definition
the omission to do something which a reasonable dentist would do; or, doing something that a reasonable dentist would not do
is inexperience a defence for negligence
no , beginners are not given leeway
however won’t be judged to as high a standard as say a consultant would be
4 criteria for clinical negligence
- dentist owed a duty of care
- the duty was breached (standard of care)
- the breach caused/ contributed to damage (causation)
- the damage was reasonably foreseeable and had negative consequences and effects
what term is used when determining outcomes of civil law cases
balance of probabilities - more or less likely
criminal law uses beyond reasonable doubt
what are the 3 Es used in evaluation
efficiency - what’s been achieved
effectiveness - was it worthwhile
economy - cost effectiveness
process evaluation
participant reaction via interview / observation
impact evaluation
assesses immediate effects at end of programme via questionnaires
outcome evaluation
assesses long term effects , recommended but is costly and difficult
logic modelling
looks at long term outcomes before short term
