Epidemiology Flashcards
epidemiology
study of populations in order to determine frequency and distribution of disease
allows diseases to be monitored, investigate risk factors , create preventative programmes , health service planning
prevalence
all individuals affected by disease at a particular Point/Period in time
expressed as a percentage - number affected / total population x100
good for chronic conditions e.g diabetes
incidence
number of new cases over a period of time , good for short term curable diseases e.g common cold
systematic sample
sample subjects are systematically picked e.g in a list of 100 people every 10th person will be picked
stratified sample
population is divided into sub groups so that all are represented
subjects are then selected from each of these groups
cluster sample
population divided into groups then random groups are selected
multi stage sampling
combines various sampling techniques
