The use of dubious methods and bending the rules to win or gain a serious advantage

Taking the time out (toilet breaks in tennis)
Deliberate deception of an official to gain an advantage

Examples where we see ‘win at all costs’
- no drawn game in many competitions
- coaches fired if unsuccessful
- high amounts of deviance
- media praise for winner

What is positive deviance
Behaviour that is outside the norms of society but with no intent to harm or break the rules
Examples of positive deviance
Overtraining despite injury’s
Injuring another player without intent
What is negative deviance
behaviour that goes against the norms of society and has an effect on individuals and society in general
What are some examples of negative deviance
Taking PEDS
Accepting bribes to loose
Diving to win a penalty
Sportsmanship
Complying to the rules spirit and etiquette of the game
