Confidentiality
Is a legal right
Personal info must be protected
Participants should not be individually identifiable in any research
How is confidentiality dealt with
Use number/letters to represent participants rather than names
Right to withdraw
Before research participants must be told they can withdraw at any point
If chosen to, researchers must destroy all participants data
How is right to withdraw dealt with
Allow participant to withdraw and destroy evidence
A parent/guardian has right to withdraw them
Informed consent
Participants should be fully informed of aims and other aspects that may influence individuals willingness to take part
Anyone under age of 16 and mentality impaired cannot consent - parent must consent for them
How is informed consent dealt with
Inform basic details to avoid deception
Retrospective consent - asking participant during debriefing or after taken part
Or debriefing after
Protection from harm
Participants must be protected from physical and psychological harm
Participants should leave same/ better state than when they entered in
How is protection from harm dealt with
Debriefing and offered counselling
Is harm occurs then investigation should end
Deception
Participants must not be intentionally lied to
Deception only accepted when benefits outweigh cost or there is no alternative
How is deception dealt with
Debriefing participant at end of the study and asking if still happy to participate
