What are ethics?
Rules of conduct recognised in respect to a particular class of human actions/particular group of culture
What are morals?
Principles/habits with respect to right/wrong conduct; ultimately a personal compass of what is right/wrong
What are the five moral dimensions?
- Information rights & obligations
- Property rights & obligations
- Accountability & control
- System quality
- Quality of life
What is profiling?
The use of computers to combine data from multiple sources and create digital dossiers of detailed information on individuals.
What are the steps of ethical analysis?
- Identify and describe the facts clearly
- Define the conflict/dilemma
- Identify the stakeholders
- Identify the options you can reasonably take
- Identify potential consequences of your options
What is the “Golden Rule?”
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
What is “Immanuel Kant’s Categorical Imperative”?
If an action is not right for everyone to take, it is not right for anyone.
What is “Descartes’ Rule of Change”? (also known as the slippery-slope rule)
If an action cannot be taken repeatedly, it is not right to take at all.
What is the “Ulitarian Principle?”
Take the action that achieves the higher/greater value.
What is the “Risk Aversion Principle?”
Take the action that produces the least harm/potential cost
What is the “Ethcial ‘no free lunch’ rule?”
Assume that virtually all tangible & intangible objects are owned by someone else unless proven otherwise.
What is liabilty?
Feature of political systems that allows individuals & firms to recover damages done to them by others.
What is accountability?
Mechanisms for identifying responsible parties.
What is due process?
A societal practice of having laws that are known and understood, along with the ability to appeal to higher authorities to ensure that the laws are applied correctly.
