What is anonymity and confidentiality?
A participants right to have personal information protected through withholding their name or keeping information safe.
What is a problem for a psychologist for anonymity and confidentiality?
May not be possible to keep some details confidential so may lead to individual identification
What is the definition of ethics?
The science of morals. A system of morals or rules of behaviour usually socially defined and can vary between cultures
Why do we need ethical guidelines?
Research could involve pain, embarrassment, fear. Humans think
What is deception?
Occurs when the participant isn’t told the research aims of a study and or isn’t told what they will be required to do.
What is a negative to not using deception?
If participant knows aims, may spoil study.
What is the right to withdraw?
Participants told they can stop during experiment if feel uncomfortable
Why may people withdraw?
If feel uncomfortable. Don’t always understand until during experiment
What is protection from harm?
Shouldn’t experience negative effects such as physical injury or lowered self esteem.
What is informed consent?
Participants given comprehensive information concerning nature and purpose of a study and their role in it
What happens to gain Childs consent?
The parent gives it
How can informed consent reduce meaningfulness?
It reveals the study aims so people’s behaviour may change
What is privacy?
A persons right to control the flow of information about themselves
Why don’t researchers want to tell people they are being observed?
As this can affect people’s behaviour
