Ethical/Legal Considerations Flashcards
Safety (including OSHA)
It’s imperative that BCAT’s encourage safety in the office, observe and report issues, encourage care giver participation when appropriate, and take precautions such as using gloves when teaching a toileting, or dealing with cuts or any bodily fluids. Technicians should complete safety training and follow the guidelines provided during that training
Responding to Emergencies
A behavior technician can be exposed to an increased risk of emergency, namely responding to challenging behavior of clients. During these times are primary focus is to keep the client, providers and any others safe. Precautions should be taken to ensure that clients and therapists avoid injury. All emergencies should be communicated to the supervisor so plans can be in place to minimize these in future and provide appropriate supports.
Confidentiality (including HIPAA)
Ensures clients’ personal health information is protected and remains confidential at all times. This includes name, diagnosis, progress, and any identifiable information
Recognition of Client Abuse
As mandated reporters of child abuse and neglect, it’s imperative that technicians are aware of what constitutes abuse and neglect. When and if you are unsure any suspected abuse or neglect should be reported to your supervisor
Dual Relationships
Any relationship, other than a therapeutic one between a practitioner and client in our practice is extended to the parents of clients that we work with and are never appropriate as it makes it difficult to maintain boundaries and can impair clinical judgement
