Ethical Issues In Animals Flashcards
Introduction
BPS alongside the experimental committee sets ethical guidelines for the use of animals.
Dunayer 2002 argued that legislation simple set standards for the cruetly, imprisonment and harm of animals.
Nc3r did a study into 271 studies, only 59% of them stated how many animals they were going to use and many were poorly designed.
First Paragraph
Protection from harm.
Anaesthetic should be used.
Some may argue that Brady 1958 caused unnecessary harm to animals. He didn’t protect monkeys from harm.
One way of dealing with this issue is to look at alternative methods e.g. PostMortem.
Second paragraph
Broadbent (1961) tried to justify animal research by stating two reasons.
- Continuity of evolution: using Darwin’s theory advanced that humans and animals are closely related.
- Using animals means less ethical issues. E.g. Can’t cause a human stress to see the effects. Peter singer 1975 argued it was speciesism.
Third paragraph
When using animals researchers should consider whether the costs outweigh the benefits.
Can use batesons cube to work it out.
