What does the BPS code of ethics do ?
States what behaviour is and isn’t acceptable when dealing with participants
What are the main ethical issues ?
Deception
Informed consent
Protection from harm
Privacy and confidentiality
What is informed consent ?
Participants should be informed on everything and should know what they are getting into and what the investigation entails ( aims , process and results )
How do you deal with informed consent ?
Consent letter , detailing all relevant information
This is signed maybe by a parent or the participants themselves
What is deception ?
Deliberately misleading the participants or withholding information at any point during the investigation
Deception can be justified depending the circumstances
How do you deal with deception?
Full de brief ( explain and provide all correct information and why the participant was deceived , after experiment )
Offer counselling or support depending on severity of circumstances
What is protection from harm ?
Participants should not be placed in a state/ risk of harm at any point
Participants should leave experiments in the same mental and physical state they entered with

How do you deal with protection from harm ?
Remind them of the right to withdraw
Counselling should be offered if stress occurs
What is privacy and confidentiality?
The participants right to control personal information
Privacy shouldn’t be invaded and anonimaty should be kept
Dealing with privacy and confidentiality?
Use initials or numbers or pseudonyms (assigned name ) when addressing participants.
Do not share their information .
