in terms of ethics, to promote well being in individuals

respect, competence, responsibility, integrity

- responsible for making sure ppts give informed consent meaning they know the aims and procedure
- could lead to demand charcteristics
what is the ppts pov of informed consent?
- have the right to know what theyre consenting to
- some may not understand what’s fully expected of them
- should know the likely risks and benefits (sometimes hard to predict)

- sometimes need to deceive ppts of the aims to avoid demand characteristics
- can also mean withholding info

- prevents ppts from giving informed consent therefore it’s unethical
- violates ppts rights
- can lead to mistrust of psychologists

- responsible of reminding ppts of their RTW
- can cause practical issues and via as the sample is smaller

- have the RTW at any point, even after the study
- shouldn’t be pressured to stay or feel like they cannot withdraw

- most research may present some risk of harm
- should plan their studies to minimise risk
- sometimes unable to predict or its inevitable

- BPS says ppts shouldn’t be exposed to more harm than they would experience daily
- should leave in the same state they entered
- can be longer term and impact other aspects of their life

- should do all they can to maintain it and not reveal personal details
- anonymise results by using pseudo names or numbers

- confidentiality is a legal right
- personal data can only be recorded if it’s kept confidential

- difficult to maintain when conducting social or field experiments
- BPS guidelines state public behaviour can be observed without ppts knowledge
