etiquette example
in football players kick ball out if other player injured for them to get treatment
what is ergogenic aid
a technique or substance used for the purpose of enhancing performance
what are stimulants
substances that speed up parts of the brain and body
advantages of stimulants.
reduce tiredness and reaction time and increase aggressiveness
disadvantages of stimulants
examples like caffeine and amphetamines- hugely addictive and have side effects like high bp, strokes and heart and liver problems. also increase risk of injury as performer more tolerant to pain, continues training with injury
narcotic analgesics
very strong painkillers which performer use to mask pain from injury/overtraining
advantage narcotic analgesic
weightlifters (by overtraining pain able to train more often to increase strength)
nfl players(by reducing pain play through an injury) and get to the end of a game
disadvantage narcotic analgesics
highly addicting- withdrawal symptoms eg heroin and morphine. injury may worsen by continuing to perform
anabolic agents
drugs that help athletes train harder and build muscle
advantage of anabolic agents
help athlete make rapid increases in strength and recovery from high intensity movements
negative of anabolic agents
cause severe mood swings in large quantities
may cause heart disease
makes- risk of testicular atrophy
females- increase in body + facial hair
peptide hormones
naturally occurring chemicals. increase num of red blood cells and therefore improves oxygen delivery in muscle
negative effects of peptide hormones
thickening of blood-heart mist pump harder, can lead to increased risk of stroke or heart attack
positive effects of peptide hormones
increase num of red blood cells, ability of blood to transport oxygen to energy producing cells in exercise
additional oxygen reduces fatigue felt in muscle
diuretics
drugs like frusemide remove fluid from the bkdy
negative effects of diuretics
causes severe dehydration, low by and muscle cramp, may be taken by any performer to hide other Ped use
positive effect of diuretic
can allow payer to lose wait rapidly in sport that require weight limit
how blood doping occurs
blood doping involves the removal of blood a few weeks prior to competition. the blood is frozen and re injected just before competition
side effects of blood doping
thickening of blood (viscosity)
potential infection
potential for heart attack
embolism (blockage of vessels)
