Ethical Issues Flashcards
What are the 5 ethical issues
Deception
Protection from psychological harm
Right to withdraw
Informed consent
Confidentiality and privacy
How to deal with informed consent
The participants must know:
What the study is about
What will happen
What the results are going to be used for
Deception
is the act of misleading participants about an experiment’s
purpose, conditions, procedures Or otherwise manipulating an experiment to control the behavior of the participants with the goal of producing better research results.
Should be given a debrief
Protection from psychological harm
Participants should leave the research in the same condition that they arrived in - no physical or mental harm
Confidentially
-All P’s and the data they provide must be anonymous unless they give their full consent.
-Can have data withdrawn
Privacy
P’s should only be observed where they have given their permission
Right to withdraw
P’s should be informed they have the right to withdraw them and their days whenever
What are the problems with investigating children
-Those under 16 cannot give consent
- Need to get from guardian/parent
What is the problem with investigating vulnerable people
-Vulnerable people cannot give consent
-need to get from a carer or trusted person
What is cost benefit analysis
an analysis of the cost effectiveness of different alternatives in order to see whether the benefits outweigh the costs.
What might the benefit be
The value or groundbreaking nature of the research
What might the cost be
The damaging effect on the participant or to the reputation of psychology
Can u break ethical issues
Only if you have enough justification
Why might you deceive participants
-To not disrupt results
-If they know about experiment may act different
-Make results more accurate
Three alternative ways of getting consent
-Prior general consent
-presumptive consent
-retrospective consent
