Cognitive approach Flashcards
What are the key assumptions
Internal mental process /thinking processes shape our behaviour – e.g.
memory, perception
Inference has to be drawn due to lack of observable evidence of
thinking processes
Heavily reliant on laboratory experiments
Uses models to explain our behaviour – theoretical model e.g. MSM –
input, storage and retrieval and computer analogies – input, coding
and output
Cognitive processes are affected by schemas (experiences / beliefs)
Sees brain and mind as separate
Has been combined with other approaches such as biological – e.g.
cognitive neuroscience to study mental processes in the brain which
are more observable
Computer model
1) input- from the environment via the senses
2) processing- Info is
encoded and processed eg
using schema
3) Output- observable behaviour
