Explain ethical issues?
When a conflict exists between the rights of participants and the aims of the research
What are the 4 main things to consider?
-informed consent (getting permission)
- deception (misleading )
-protection from harm
-privacy and confidentiality
What are the 3 main forms of informed consent?
Presumption - ask a similar group
Prior general - agree to be deceived
Retrospective - get consent after the study
How would deception be solved?
At the end of the study ps should be given a debrief discussing :
-True aims of study
-Details not given during study
-What there data will be used for
-Their right to withhold data
What’s the key scale when looking at protection from harm?
Ps should be at no more risk than they would in everyday life
What are the 3 things a researcher should do to help protection from harm?
- ensure the right to withdraw is available throughout
-reassured their behaviour is normal and typical - provide counselling if ps have been distressed
3 things a researcher can do to protect privacy and confidentiality?
-personal details must be protected or not recorded
-refer to ps using numbers initials or false names
- personal data can’t be shared with other researchers
