Ethical Implications Of Research Flashcards
Explain ethical implications and social sensitivity
Ethical issues concern the consequences that psychology research may have. Some areas of psychology research may have greater social sensitivity eg. Study on depression SS vs long term memory not SS
What are the implications for research process?
All psychologists research has potential consequences but mainly SS research. Stages of planning are Important when investigating SS research.
Explain how research question links to ethics and SS.,
Sieber and Stanley: warn the way in which research questions are phrased and investigated may influence way in which findings are interpreted.
Describe how dealing with PPS can limit ethical issues
Informed consent, confidentiality and prevention of psychological harm particularly important in SS research. Eg. Domestic abuse studies PPS may worry an EX will find out so PPS may not understand effect on research.
Describe the way findings are used for socially sensitive research.
Researcher consider in advance how findings may be used. It may impact the data they actually collect. May give scientific credibility to prejudice eg. US IQ tests used to restrict immigration.
Owen—> research on people in a minimally conscious state received media attention as he made contact etc..
Onen strength is the benefit for groups (AO3)
Eg. Homosexuality in 1952 DSM-1 listed it as a sociopathic personality disorder but removed it in 1975.
Credited Kinsey report as the report highlighted homosexuality is a typical expression of human behaviour.
Illustrates importance of researchers tackling topics that are sensitive.
Counterpoint (AO3)
In some cases could lead to negative consequences for groups involved. Eg. Investigating genetic basis of criminality has found a ‘criminal gene’ should someone be locked up/ killed for having the gene?
Must be careful consideration of possible outcomes and consequences.
One strength is the real world application (AO3)
Certain groups rely on research related to socially sensitive issues. Government looks to research when developing important social policies eg. Decisions around childcare, education etc…
