ESU Flashcards
What do electrical surgical devices do?
sever tissue, stop bleeding, uses a radio frequency in the range of 300khz to 3MHz, provide a wide range of power for cutting, desiccating, and fulgurating tissues during the surgical procedure
Crest Factor
the ratio of peak to effective (RMS) voltage or current which is used as an indicator of an ESUs ability to coagulate tissue
Hemostasis
process which causes bleeding to stop
hemostasis effect
termination of bleeding by means of complex coagulation
Monopolar ESU
incorporates cut and coagulation modes of operation, electrosurgical effect takes place at the active electrode only, return electrode: patient plate, reference electrode, dispersive electrode
Bipolar ESU
forceps or other electrosurgical accessories having two electrodes in one instrument, both sides of generator are connected to a surgical instrument, allows for better current control, current passes through the two poles of a forceps rather than through the entire body
Argon Plasma and Beam Coagulation ESU
when combined with monopolar electrosurgical units can be used to rapidly create hemostasis or to treat lesions, gas flow clears blood, other fluids, and debris from the surgical site, enhancing surgeon’s view, provides enhanced coagulation over standard coagulation
Coagulation mode
used to control or stop bleeding by increasing the crest factor, higher or increased crest factor, low power technique, can also be used to for destroying undesirable tissue masses
Cut Mode
Associated with a low crest factor, heats tissue so rapidly that cells explode and contents vaporize leaving an incision
Blend Mode
hybrid of cut and coagulation, used when surgeon requires more hemostasis effect than cut provides, saves time as only one pass with electrode is necessary
Spray (Fulguration)
used for rapid control of bleeding across a wide area, non contract type of coagulation, current sparks or jumps for active electrode to the tissue, Uses: to destroy surface layers of cells in the area from which a lesion has been removed
Low Power Setting ( when used)
Neurosurgery, Oral
Medium Power Setting
General Surgery, abdominal opening,
High Power
Opening the chest, Masectomy
Argon
a non-flammable gas used to create thermal energy
