Estimating with uncertainty Flashcards

1
Q

How to measure standard error

A

This is the standard deviation of the estimate’s sampling distribution.

Standard error of the estimates distribution= Sampling st dev/ square root n

The standard error measures precision

Q

What is a sampling distribution?

A

The sampling distribution is the probability distribution of all values for an estimate that we might obtain when we sample a population.

Repeated random sampling can be used to estimate the true mean of the population

Q

The effect of sample size on standard error

A

The equation for working out the standard error means that the larger the sample size, the smaller the standard error (increased precision)

Q

How to calculate a 95% confidence interval?

A

2 SE contain 95% of data so can be used to work out 95% CI

CI= Y + 2SE

These can be displayed using error bars
