Esthetics Flashcards
Ideal incisor ratio
Width/length should be 75-85%
Connector space
What is it and what rule does it follow
Space where anterior teeth appear to touch
50-40-30 rule: ideal connector zone between centrals is 50%, ideal between lateral and central is 40%, ideal between canine and lateral is 30%
4 specific categories that impact a smile
- Microesthetics
- Macroesthetics
- Gingival esthetics
- Facial esthetics
Macroesthetics
Applies when groupings of teeth are considered
Identifies relationships/ratios between anterior teeth and surrounding tissue
Incisal embrasures ______ as you move distally
Increase in size
Tooth reveal
M vs E position
Macroesthetics
Amount of tooth structure/gingiva that shows in various views and lip positions
M: minimal tooth reveal, decreases w age as cheeks sag
E: max extension of lips
Max central length compared to laterals in ideal smile
Men vs women
Men: .5-1.0 mm
Women: 1.0-1.5mm
Bipupillary plane
Line between eyes should be parallel to the incisal edge of central incisors
Esthetic zone
Canine to canine
Central incisors dominating
Gingival symmetry
Classic- canine and central incisor gingival margins are at the same level
Modified- canine gingival margin is higher than central gingival margin
What does FM=DM mean
The dental midline should be as close as possible and parallel to the facial midline
What does tooth reveal depend on
Vertical tooth position And individual facial expression
Microesthetics
Elements that make teeth look like teeth
Lobes, depressions
Rule of golden proportions
Anterior tooth size
The lateral size should be 75% of central, the mesial half of the canine should be 75% of lateral
Facial HOC for all teeth
Cervical third
Gingival exposure
How high the upper lip goes when smiling effects the amount of gingiva exposed
High smile line- gums show, medium smile line- ideal, and low smile line- lip hangs lower
Anterior max contacts
Central:
Mesial-incisal Distal- incisal/middle junction
Lateral:
Mesial- incisal/middle junction. Distal- middle third
Canine:
Mesial- incisal/middle junction. Distal- middle third
DH=FH
Max central incisal edge should be perpendicular to the facial midline
BUT it is more important that the max centrals are parallel to it
Axial inclination
As you move distally, the crowns appear to have a more distal tilt in order to frame the smile
Facial esthetics
Incisors should be parallel to the midline
Ideal smile shape
Convex
The max incisal edges are below the canines, u shape
Natural appearance
