Esters Flashcards
How are esters used?
Perfumes + solvents
How do you name an ester?
Alcohol with ‘yl’ and carboxylic acid with ‘oate’
Ethanol + propanoic acid = X + water, name X
Ethyl propanoate
To make an eater you need a carboxylic acid and an alcohol but what else?
A catalyst e.g. Concentrated HCL
Are esters polar or non-polar?
Non-polar
How can you split up an ester?
Adding water - hydrolysis
How do you calculate the mass of something when e.g. 10g of something else is used
Calculate gfm, 1 mole - 1 mole, divide gfm’s by number on right to get 1g, times by gram you already know
Percentage yield equals
Actual yield / theoretical yield
Esterification is the process to make esters, but what is needed to make them?
Alkanoic acids and alkanols or carboxylic acid and alcohol
