Esters Flashcards
What is an ester
-An Alcohol reacting with a carboxylic acid by esterification
-With concentrated H2SO4 and heat
-Reaction is at equilibrium
Formula for forming esters
Carboxylic acid + Alcohol <=> Ester + Water
-Catalyst: conc H2SO4
What are biodiesels
A mixture of methyl esters made from tri esters and 3 moles methanol
Why are biodiesels useful
They converse (reverse) crude oil supplies
-They reduce the amount of CO2 released in the atmosphere
Define Hydrolysis
Breaking a covalent bond with water
Give the reagants and condition for the production of soap
Triesters (veg oil) + NaOH (aq)—-> Soap (COONa salt) + alcohol
Reflux
Give the reagents and conditions for the production of biodiesel
COONa + CH3OH——-> Biodiesel +3NaOH
NaOH (reflux) and methanol
Industrial uses of acid anhydrides over acyl chloride
-Cheaper
-Less corrosive
-Don’t react with water
-Less violent/exothermic
