Essex rebellion Flashcards
1
Q
Why did Essex’s relationship with the queen break down and lead to a rebellion?
A
- Originally, he had a verbal confrontation with the Queen, which caused him to be slapped and for him to nearly draw his sword.
- He was put on house arrest.
- Essex, already angered by Robert Cecil’s promotion, was sent to suppress Irish rebels.
- He instead went against the Queen’s wishes and made a peaceful agreement with them.
- Upon returning to explain his actions, Essex runs into the queen without her wig, which angered her.
- Resultingly, Essex loses his titles, offices and monopoly (sweet wine), which leaves him financially ruined.
- Thus, he rallied supporters and took 4 hostages to London where he hoped he would be able to influence a rebellion.
- It failed and lead to his death.
