Q

essay on fertilization and pollination

A

Pollination alone does not usually result in the formation of fruits and seeds. Ovules begin developing into seeds only after a sperm cell brought by a pollen grain fuses with the egg cell within the ovule through the process of fertilization. Fertilization ensures that the characteristics of the new plant that grows from the seed are determined by its parents. In other words, the new plant receives a “blueprint” for growth from the sperm cell and egg cell that unite to form it. The sperm cell and egg cell are called gametes, or reproductive cells. Reproduction in which sperm and egg unite is sexual reproduction.
