Essays Flashcards
0
Q
Muscle contraction
A
- Action potential travels down motor neuron and releases acetylcholine at neuromuscular synapse.
- ACh binds to motor end plate on sarcolemma and sends signal down t-tubule to cell’s center
- calcium ions are released by sarcoplasmic reticulum and bind to actin.
- ATP on myosin heads split; cross-bridge is formed binding myosin heads to actin.
- ATP is released ; sarcomere shortens and muscle contracts
1
Q
Rigor mortis
A
When skeletal muscles run out of ATP and sarcoplasmic reticulum is unable to remove calcium ions from sarcoplasm. Without ATP, the cross bridges cannot detach from active sites, muscle then locks in contracted position.m
2
Q
Properties of skeletal muscle
A
- Excitability
- Contractibility
- Extensibility
- Elasticity
3
Q
Aging in skeletal muscle
A
- Decrease in diameter
- Decrease in elasticity
- Decrease tolerance
- Muscle fatigue occurs quicker
- Increase in recovery
4
Q
Carpal tunnel
A
Median nerve that travels through flexor retinaculum gets inflamed and there is no room to relieve pressure
5
Q
Shoulder stabilization muscles; anterior dislocation
A
Supraspinatus
Infraspinatus
Subscapularis
Teres minor
Head of humerus is displaced anteriorly from glenoid cavity
