How many paragraphes does a standard essay contain , what are they ?
5 , intro paragraphe with a thesis statement , two or three body paraghraghs, a concluding paragraph that reiterates the thesis statement
What is a Subject?
It’s a word/phrase which answers the question on what the essay is about.
What is a Theme ?
It’s what communicates your message/ position on the subject that you have chosen to write about
What are the five steps to writing an essay?
Choose subject, generate information, make an outline with said information, write, review and revise
What is a thesis statement?
It is one or two sentences. that tell the readers what the main message and central focus of the essay is , it is also the last sentence of the introduction.
There are 4 Rethorical modes and in Exposition mode 5 organizational patterns, what are they?
Example & Definition, Process analysis, Classification & Division. Cause and Effect, Compare & Contrast
What does the intro consist of ?
Grabber + narrowing down + thesis statement
What does a body paragraph consist of ?
Topic + Controlling idea
What does the conclusion consist of ?
Summarization of the main ideas + reiteration of the thesis statement + optionally a clincher
What can be a Grabber ?
Anecdote
Strong statement
Rethorical question
Quotation
Background info about the subject
Definition of the phenomenon
What 3 things should you look at in order to organize your essay properly ?
Subject
Intended audience
Purpose
There are 4 different way to arrange information , what are they ?
Chronologically
Climactic or emphatic
Logical
Equivalent or random
How would you organise an Example Essay?
In any way:
Chronological: presenting examples as they occurred in time
Climactic: from the weakest to the strongest
Logical: examples follow a logical sequence
Random: in any order if each has the same weight
How would you organize a Process Analysis Essay?
In the order of what happens not necessarily chronologically but sequentially
How do you organize a Cause and Effect Essay?
One effect many causes
