Compare and contrast the functional and conflict perspective on social inequality
Functional perspective: based on the assumptions that society that society is a stable, orderly system. Characterized by societal consensus, where the majority of people share a common value, belief, and behavioral expectations.
Conflict perspective: groups in society are engaged in a continuous power struggle to control scarce resources. Conflict may take form in politics, litigation, negotiation, or family discussions about financial matters.
Social inequality:
Describe and assess concerted cultivation and natural growth approaches to parenting. Relate these different approaches to “unequal childhoods”
Concerted cultivation: most middle class parents allow their children to build opportunities, negotiate and navigate in social interactions in a way that opens more doors of opportunity and leads to greater rewards. Natural growth: Dependence on institutions, parents allow child to grow at their own rate, emerging sense of constraint.
