what would your two points be for the theme of politics
A
- political context of the time
(M: augustus direct address, and in direct comparison to jupiter, myth of golden age links to augustan golden age
A: A comes accross augustus in underworld ‘son of a god’ ‘will make golden age again’ ‘extend empire’) - politics as religion, power, gender
(M: arachne has all these aspects. religion as the gods are teaching mortals a lesson, power as the gods punish mortals that are too powerful as a reminder of the hierarchical structure, gender as the idea of weaving reinforces gender norms
A: dido and camilla as examples of powerful women and how that is unnatural and cannot last – they both die. lavinia as a passive and obedient woman fully compliant and is rewarded by being the mother of the roman race and wife of aeneas)

what would your two points be for the theme of time
A
- time in the underworld
(O: o travels to the underworld in book 11 and this bends time, he sees elpanor who has died and needs to be buried and he also sees teiresias who tells him of the fate of his ship and crew – past future and present all intertwine
A: aeneas travels to the underworld in book 6 and sees the triumphal parade of rome showing aeneas the future of his city and what his fate is leading to) - divine intervention of time
(O: athene holds back dawn in book 24 giving o and p more time in bed together
A: gods engineer time and fate to ensure the future they want e.g. plagues and omens when trojans try and settle somewhere other than the destined land + aeneas’ reminder to leave carthage and dido despite his love there)

- violence of the gods
(M: story of daphne and apollo, gods enjoying the hunt and chase as well as the violence and even after she is turned to a tree to protect her he still defiles this and uses her branches to make a laurel wreath
A: juno is the first character introduced bc her violence drives the poem, plus in book 2 we see violence of the gods as they destroy troy (neptune tears the walls down, juno summons greek ships, jupiter gibves greeks strength)) - violence against women
(M: archne punished for her talent and for calling out the violence and cruelty of the gods as she wove a tapestry depicting jupiters assaults and her tapestry was better than athenes
A: dido punished a violent death for the crimes of her power – before her death she is turned into a lovesick puppy taking away from her capabilities as a leader)

- a new voice or angle
(I: andromache tries to give hector an alternative narrative – domestic, emotional, familial.
she tries to change the story
M: arachne subverts the narrative by telling the stores in a way that challenges the divine) - reshaping the narrative
(I: priam asking for hectors body pauses the war in a moment of shared grief and human empathy bypassing the dominent narrative
M: philomena similarly finds a way to break through the narrative changing it and defying odds)
