Q

Using evidence from the graph, explain how is this a good example of the dangers of commodity dependency on a cash crop (define both terms)

A

This is a good example of the dangers of commodity dependency on a cash crop which is a crop sold for profit but because the graph shows unstable prices of coffee over time which is commodity dependency, a heavy reliance on a product for economic stability, but if there is no stability on the prices then it is dangerous because there can be sudden drops in the economy leading to higher unemployment rates and financial struggle.

Q

What is the Von Thünen mode to understand location and production choices by farmers is based on what two main variables that must be considered?

A

The two main variables that must be considered is perishability of the product, which is just how fast the product will go bad, and the cost of transportation of the products to the market

Q

Why would the zone of dairy farming be so close to the market (city) in the 1800s but possibly be more spread out today?

A

The zone of dairy farming can possibly be more spread out today because of our advancements of technology. In this age we have several types of preservatives to make our food last longer and because dairy needs to be refrigerated so it wont go bad quickly we have refrigerated trucks, where this helps the product be at a large distance away from the market but still keeps the product safe and consumable

Q

If you were going to farm medical marijuana in a state that it was legal in, and you chose to do this in indoors, with controlled growing conditions, what other variables besides the ones von Thünen considered would influence your decision?

A

What would influence my decision is most likely how much labor there must be put into planting, regulating the growing conditions and harvesting the product which adds to the extra cost of labor, and the cost of the energy being used which grows drastically when you are farming indoors using intensive technology where you must regulated the lighting and climate to maintain the product well.

Q

Based on part C, describe which zone shown above would you set up your operation and tell us why.

A

I would probably set up my operation in the first zone or ring because it is considered an intensive farming zone. The operation does not require a lot of land to set up, but there is a lot of technology requiered to run this operation and a lot of resources and labor need to maximize the crops yield. This area would benefit this operation well because it has easier access to technology like the control of special lighting, pest control, and climate control which is the most important factor of the operation.

Q

Describe the coffee price graph in terms of the changes from 2003-2023.

A

From the beginning of 2003 there was a gradual increase in the price with few smaller peaks that flutuated between increasing and decreasing, but kept rising over the years. Until about 2011 where there was a greater peak which then resulted in a gradual decline over a few years until there was a sharp increase in 2014. The sharp increase happened in a short period of time but then started to gradually go down with a few peaks of increase, but it started to rise slowly around 2020 and 2021 but reaching the end of 2023 there was a drastic deacrese in price that only lasted a few days and then regulated to what is was before the drastic drop.

Q

Using the trends and data in the graph, explain why fair-trade efforts would benefit coffee farmers

A

Fair trade efforts would greatly benefit coffee farmers because even though their are unpredicable peaks and declines in the graph, it would ensure that the farmers will recieve a fair price for there crops no matter how the market currently is and help them maintain good working and living conditions.

Q

Imagine that tea in the form of hot tea, caffeinated water, or chai becomes globally more popular than coffee in 2024. What is the likely trend for coffee prices?

A

I think if tea, or caffeinated water, or chai became more popular than coffee than the most likely trend to happen is the decline in coffee prices. When their is less demand for coffee then the suppliers will lower their prices which will lead to the overall decline of coffee process resulting in a decline of economic trends because their were changes in consumer spending.

Q

Describe the changes in 17 years for the following languages: Chinese, Tagalog (look it up), Vietnamese, Korean, and Haitian.

A

Over the past 17 years, Chinese is the only one that stayed the same and stood strong ranked number 2 in the chart. For Tagalog, Vietnamese, and Korean, they all went up only one place of racking, but one never went over the other, they stayed in the same order. Lastle we have Haitian that wasnt even in the top 10 to begin with in 2000 but 17 years later became more known and now made it to number 10 in the chart.

Q

Why is the number of French and German speakers falling in rank?

A

The number of French and German speakers are falling in rank maybe because of the different immagration patterns we have today. Looking at the data it look like we have more people speaking Asian languages so we most likely have more migrants from Asia and less from Europe.

Q

Identify and explain the type of diffusion that you believe is the cause of the changes for the Asian languages?

A

I believe that the cause and type of diffusion of the change of rank of the Asian languages is relocation diffusion. As the number of Asian immagrants moving to the US increased, it increased the influence of their native language and it spread through the people here

Q

What spatial patterns or processes can you infer from the data? You should address the languages of two regions (Asian languages, European, or Caribbean.) This assumes you understand the type of diffusion involved here.

A

From looking at the data I can infer that there is a noticable increased pattern in the Asian languages which is most likely due to relocation diffusion driven by the immigration of Asian immagrants, and that their is a decline in European languages most likely due to the decline of new immagrants from Europe or also of the assimilation trend where the immagrants from europe are taking on the primary language of the US, english.
