eschatology Flashcards
what is heaven?
a place of perfection with God, where everything that is not love passes away
‘ he who believes in me shall never die”
what is hell?
a place of eternal pain and suffering; it is the complete absence from God
• it is a place where those who have refused the love of God go.
what is purgatory?
a place believed only by Catholics where our sins are forgiven and we ‘achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven’
types of judgement:
immediate (only soul) last judgement (glorified body and soul)
what’s immediate/particular judgement
the judgement that happens immediately at the death of an individual
what’s the last judgement?
the last day when all will be judged, both living and dead
every body is resurrected and reunited with their soul. we all will be judged
beliefs about judgement:
some protestants believe the soul and the body remain in the grave until the last day, and then either go to heaven or hell
many Christians believe that the soul goes to heaven/hell immediately after death and is united with the body on the last day.
Catholics believe in particular judgement & the last judgement, whereas some Christians only believe in the last judgement.
why teachings about life and death are important:
The fact we are judged means we should try to live good lives.
Means they will follow scripture, the teaching of the Church, and take part in the Mass & the sacraments.
They will not live sinful lives.
Catholics will feel that their lives have a purpose.
beliefs about life after death:
Catholics believe in purgatory, protestants do not
Some believe you need to be a Christian to go to heaven, others do not. ‘no one comes to the Father except through me.’
some Christians don’t believe in hell as it goes against a benevolent God
the bible doesn’t mention ‘purgatory’ so most Christians don’t believe in it though it refers to a ‘cleansing fire’ which the Catholic Church calls purgatory
non- Catholic, evangelical Protestants and Christian beliefs about life after death
Non-Catholics do not believe in purgatory as it is not in the Bible
Some protestants, mainly evangelicals, believe that the soul and the body remain in the grave until the last day, and then those who have rejected God’s love go to hell, and those who believe and lived good lives go to heaven.
Many Christians believe that the soul goes to heaven or hell immediately after death, but is then united with the body on the last day.
