Tet Offensive

A

(1968) Tet Lunar New Year meant that many ARVN were off duty
-Jan 30th, VC and NVA suprise attack 26 cities/bases in the South
-was a change from guerilla warfare
-VC entered the US embassy in Saigon
There was no clear victory, huge civillain losses.

A

-humiliation (VC in US Embassy)
-March 10 Gallup poll, 33% of Americans believed that the US was making progress in the war
-Johnson lost support of public and congress
-31 March, Johnson decides to deescalate war and wouldn’t seek or except another term as president
-South Vietnemese people unhappy that their government had failed to protect them (vulnerability of ARVN)

18
Q

Ways in which the Tet Offensive wasn’t a defeat for the US

A

-58,000 out of 84,000 communists killed
-severly damaged VC
-ARVN fought well (unexpectedly)
-some US soldiers felt they could win the war with more troops
-VC failed to capture the US embassy
-bases and cities recaptured in 3 weeks
