ESC Program Administrator Flashcards
To assist in memorizing some of the basic information to pass the Virginia Erosion and Sediment control Program Administrator exam.
What are the 13 Exempt Land Disturbing Activities?
Activities Disturbing Less Than 1 Acre, Home Landscaping and Maintenance Work, Single Family Homes, Utilities, Railroads, Mining and Drilling, Shore Erosion Control Projects, Multi-jurisdictional Projects, State Projects, and Federal Projects.
What percentage of erosion is attributed to accelerated erosion in the US?
70%
How are the erosion rates per acre on construction sites compared to cropland?
10-20 times greater.
What are the five types of erosion in order of occurrence?
Raindrop Erosion, Sheet Erosion, Rill Erosion, Gully Erosion, and Channel Erosion (R.S.R.G.C.)
What is the “K” factor?
Soil Erodibility Factor
What are soil properties/parameters that influence erodibility by water?
Infiltration Rate, Permeability, Total Water Capacity, Cohesiveness, Particle Size
What are the three general K factor ranges?
- 23 and lower - low erodibility
- 24-0.36 - moderate erodibility
- 37 and higher - high erodibility
What are the three critical slope categories?
Gradient 0-7% -Slope Length 300 feet (100 meters)
Gradient 7-15% - Slope Length 150 feet (50 meters)
Gradient 15% & Over - Slope Length 75 feet (25 meters)
What are the three general ranges of soil erodibility?
0-7% - Low Erosion Hazard
7-15% - Moderate Erosion Hazard
15% & Over - High Erosion Hazard
What is the most important factor influencing erosion?
Surface Cover
What are the four main factors that influence erosion?
Climate, Soils, Topography, Surface Cover (Vegetation)
When should temporary soil stabilization be applied?
Within seven days to denuded areas that may not be at final grade but will remain dormant (undisturbed for longer than 14 days.
When is permanent vegetation considered established?
When ground cover is uniform and mature enough to survive and will inhibit erosion.
