- elected studbook keeper → responsible for collecting data on captive populations of their specific species (e.e. births, deaths, transfers)
- collections can ask studbook keeper for breeding / transfer recommendations
- data used to judge if species is doing well in European zoos → may recommend ‘upgrading’ to EEP
