ES3 How Is Earth Changing Final Flashcards
What are earths plates?
South American plate North American plate Indo-Australian plate Pacific plate African plate Antarctic plate Eurasian plate
What are Earths plates made of
Solid rock and granite
What’s the theory of continental drift?
Alfred Wegener created a theory that the countries on earth were once one big supercontinent called Pangea. Evidence to back this up is that if you rearrange the countries and put them close together, it’d make a perfect puzzle. Another piece of evidence is that the same animal fossils were found across oceans.
What are the types of plate boundaries?
Convergent, divergent, and transform
What are convergent effects?
C-C Convergent- mountains form and earthquakes start. Examples of this are Mt. Everest.
O-C Convergent- volcanoes and trenches form. Earthquakes occur. And examples is the Marian Trench.
O-O Convergent- island arc volcanoes happen. An example is Hawaii.
What are transform effects?
Faults form in the ground and Earthquakes can occur. An example is Japan’s Killer Quake.
What are Divergent Effects?
Sea floor spreading occurs which causes a new ocean floor. Since the plates are moving, earthquakes can also occur. Underwater mountains form as well. An example is a Rift Valley.
What’s the cause of movement for Convergent?
C-C: new floor is created so the old one is pushed to the outside. So 2 continental plates collide which causes mountains.
O-C: new floor is being created which makes the oceanic crust subduct because it is denser. The oceanic subducts under continental.
O-O: the new floor is being created which in effect, causes the floor to subduct. Hotspots can be created by this.
What’s the cause of movement for Divergent?
New ocean floor is being formed which causes sea floor spreading.
What’s the cause of movement for Transform?
The plates in the Transform Boundary rub against each other, which can cause major earthquakes killing and destroying everything in the area near the earthquake.
What causes plate movements?
Convection Currents
