ES 3 Flashcards
What type of reaction occurs at the cathode? Is it the negative or positive terminal?
Reduction negative
What type of reaction occurs at the anode? Is it positive or negative terminal?
Oxidation positive
What does electrolysis mean?
Breaking apart using electricity
In an aqueous solution, what are the rules for when Hydrogen is made in an electrolysis reaction at the cathode?
If the metal is a G1, G2 or aluminium, the hydrogen from the water would be reduced at the cathode instead of the meta in the compound
Why don’t sulfate ions go to either of the electrodes?
It can’t be oxidised anymore than a sulfate (VI) ion
What is the equation for the reduction of water at the cathode?
2H2O + 2e –> 2OH- + H2
What is the equation for the oxidation of water at the anode?
2H2O –> 4H+ + 4e + O2
