what does the eruv tavshilin allow a person to do ?
If Yom Tov falls out on Friday (or on Thursday and Friday outside Israel), in general, one may not cook or bake from Yom Tov for Shabbat, however, if one cooked and there was leftovers it may be eaten on Shabbat. Yet, if one designated an Eruv Tavshilin from before Yom Tov then it’s permissible to cook or bake from Yom Tov for Shabbat
What constitutes an eiruv tavshilin ?
a baked and a cooked item (cooked dish mast be something eaten with bread usually )
just a cooked item bedieved ok
just a baked item bedieved doesn’t work
what if you only going to cook and not bake ?
only need a cooked dish
what size does the foods have to be ?
a kezayis but the bigger the better
can you cook on Thursday for shabbos ?
no can only cook on Friday for shabbos not Thursday
does the cooking of the eiruv tavshillin have to be cooked before shabbos ?
should be finished before shabbos (so could be used )
if not
Y’T sheni - can be makel
!st day Y’T -only be makel in the case of a tzorech gadol
if 2 families are eating at the same house ?
How many eiruv’s do they need ?
only need 1 eiruv
what if your’e gonna be in a hotel and not cook do you need an eiruv tavshilin ?
yes ,for lighting candles
but don’t say the bracha on the eiruv
what if you forgot an eiruv tavshillin ?
1st time can rely on the rav
if they planned on relying on the rav or 2nd time doing this -they cant rely on the rav
what if you forgot a 2nd time ?
s/s he can’t light candles and must get someone else to light for him -or only light 1 candle
what if If Yom Tov (excluding the two days of Rosh Hashana) falls out on Thursday and Friday, and one forgot to make Eruv Tavshilin before yom Tov?
one may make Eruv Tavshilin on the first day and stipulate “If today is Yom Tov then there’s no need for an eruv and if today isn’t Yom Tov then the eruv should be set aside in order to permit cooking and baking.”
some say its better to just rely on the rav’s eruv
what if the eiruv is eaten or lost ?
