Eruption Patterns/Caries Classification Flashcards
eruption
movement of the tooth through surrounding tissues so that more of the tooth becomes visible in the mouth
exfoliation
natural process by which roots of baby tooth are resorbed and dissolved until so little root remains that the baby tooth falls out
extraction
purposeful treatment of tooth removal
when does the mixed dentition period begin
when a child gets the first permanent tooth
eruption patterns/sequences
mandibular teeth erupt before maxillary counterparts
teeth erupt anterior to posterior with 3 exceptions:
-primary canines after primary first molars
-permanent first molars erupt first in secondary dentition
-permanent maxillary canines erupt after second premolars
permanent molars eruption times
first molars- age 6
second molars- age 12
third molars- age 17
two systems of classification of dental caries and restorations
black’s classification system
complexity classification
black’s classification system
categorizes carious lesions/restorations based on the type of tooth affects and its location
6 categories
black’s classification systems class I
caries or restoration in the pits and fissures on the
-occlusal surfaces of molars and premolars
-buccal or lingual pits of molars
-lingual pits of maxillary incisors
black’s classification systems class II
caries or restoration on the
-proximal (mesial and/or distal) surfaces of premolars and molars
-restoration would involve two (or more) surfaces
black’s classification systems class III
caries or restoration on the proximal (mesial and/or distal) surfaces of incisors and canines
does NOT involve incisal surface
black’s classification systems class IV
caries or restoration on the proximal (mesial and/or distal) surfaces of incisors and canines and also involves the incisal angle
black’s classification systems class V
caries or restoration on the gingival or cervical third of the facial or lingual surfaces of any tooth
black’s classification systems class VI
caries or restoration on the incisal edge of anterior teeth or the cusp tips of the posterior teeth
complexity classification of caries and restorations
simple caries or restorations- involved one tooth surface
compound caries or restorations- involve two tooth surfaces
complex caries or restorations- involved more than two tooth surfaces
